 Culture

Symbolically, the Upper Venosta Valley is still determined by the Marienberg Monastery, whose roots originate with the adjacent Rhaetian Engadin. This connection can still be noticed in today's dialect, and it is not too long ago, when the Romanic language was spoken here too. The early Christianization in the Venosta Valley can also be witnessed by the ancient Prokulus Church in Naturno. The numerous Roman churches in the Venosta Valley date back to this period. In their simple and almost plain construction they survived over the centuries and are now known far beyond the regions borders.

Many castles keep watch over the paths, some tumbled-down and some as venerable and sublime as ever, like the Churburg Castle, which belonged to the Counts of Trapp uninterruptedly The largest private armoury collection in Europe is the Churburg Castle’s pièce de résistance and is visited by many lovers of culture. The hospice in S. Valentino, built in 1140 with the intention of rescuing travellers from storms, is also worth a visit.
